Realdania By & Byg’s mission is to improve the quality of life through philanthropic investment and active ownership of properties and areas for urban development. We are a subsidiary of the philanthropic association Realdania and our activities help to realize Realdania’s mission to promote the quality of life in the built environment.
We own and preserve a collection of historic buildings that represent the development of Danish building heritage over 500 years. The historic buildings are rented to private individuals or businesses. We also develop innovative and experimental new buildings, and we are involved in long-term urban development projects in partnership with municipalities in order to contribute to the development and quality of Danish towns.

When Realdania By & Byg completes a project we publish a book or pamphlet about the project and its findings. Find our publications currently available in English that can be downloaded for free.

We have a portfolio of more than fifty important historic buildings situated all over Denmark, all of which have been – or will be – updated through gentle restoration, and which, with their present-day usage, constitute a living built heritage over a 500-year period.
Our portfolio of historic houses contains a number of the houses which prominent Danish architects of the last 100 years have built for themselves and their families. Their homes are a significant expression of the architecture and style which characterised his or her work. As their own client, the architects have been able to test ideas and refine their artistic expression without interference from others.
We are involved in a number of large urban development projects in partnership with Danish municipalities. The aim is to find new sustainable solutions for climate challenges, social cohesion, urban life, traffic and parking that can inspire other developers and contribute to the development of high-quality urban districts for people.
We develop experimental new buildings that can inspire the development of sustainable modern buildings and improve the quality of life in the built environment, e.g. by improving indoor climate, optimizing energy and heat consumption, reducing carbon footprint by choosing sustainable construction methods.
