A fine example of the classic Danish farms that sprang up throughout Denmark at the start of the eighteenth century - built using profits from the co-operative movement. Realdania By & Byg is in the process of restoring the quadrangle listed building.
The Jensen Family Farm, built in Korup, close to Odense, in 1900, was geared towards high productivity, making use of the very latest methods of production. The farm is a rare, full-fledged example from the heyday of the co-operative movement. Together with a number of other agricultural properties in Realdania By & Byg’s portfolio, the farm tells the story of over 200 years of development in Danish agricultural construction, which reached its peak at the turn of the twentieth century thanks to the success of the co-operative movement.
Previously, the architecture and building practices employed in agricultural buildings were characterised by local traditions. This was not the case with the farm in Korup. Instead, it took the form of a modern farm built in the style of the day, a style that swept across the whole of Denmark at the end of the nineteenth century: Historicism. Stepping inside the farmhouse today, we are greeted by ceilings and walls adorned with the original painted decoration and landscape motifs. Likewise, the original doors, borders and high panelling are intact together with the original historical painting techniques used 120 years ago.
The Jensen family owned the farm for several generations and preserved it in its original state without major changes. As such, the property is an unparalleled example of its type. Both as the blueprint for agricultural properties in the era of the co-operative movement and as an unaltered example of the rural way of life at the beginning of the twentieth century.
